Leading and Inspiring

I just recently saw an interview with Simon Sinek, (author, speaker and consultant on leadership and management) talking about leadership and how to inspire others to do remarkable things. It was a great way to look at how we interact with others whether it is with our friends, family, co-workers or customers. One of his points was how to create a safe environment where people wake up every day inspired to go to work and at the end of the day feel fulfilled by their work and their contribution to something greater than themselves.

Hmmm, I wonder how many people out there are actually looking to be inspired or to really care about the work they do or the relationships they have with others. Then I realized that it really doesn’t matter if others are looking for this type of life or not. What really matters is what we are doing ourselves. Because when it comes right down to it you know that if you are doing the right thing and working towards the right stuff it doesn’t matter what opinion others have. It’s about knowing that you are doing the best you can to make life a better place for you and others.

So often the public thinks of leaders as the head of a company, government, or a person in a high position. Contrary to that belief a leader can be anyone. It could be your parent, an employee, a friend…really anyone.

Let’s look at the qualities that define a leader. Leaders understand that it’s not about them. They get it. They take care of others and have selflessness in their characteristics. They also have a way of developing trust, have empathy and put others ahead of themselves. Good leaders know their purpose but also can communicate it to others. Speaking of communicating, leaders know that communication isn’t about talking but about listening. Good leaders are like parents, they protect others by taking the risk and they choose to make sacrifices so that the people that are important to them are safe. This is a phenomenon because the effect of a good leader will in turn make people give their all to see their leaders’ vision come to life.

Leadership is a learned skill and by taking the time to find out what kind of person you are you can then take steps to become the person you want to be.

"If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader." — John Quincy Adams
