Movie Lessons

I love to watch a good movie, don’t you? I like all kinds of movies. I like a good love story, fairy tales, achievements, epic, old, historical, thought provoking as well as an overall feel good movie. I don’t go to the theatre much as I find it a distraction with all the people around me. But to get to sit down and enjoy a movie’s story and the meaning or lesson from the tale is a treat. Some movies I have watched many times and may even have some of the dialogue memorized, but the overall feeling will be the same and I continue to enjoy it each time as I remember why I liked it so much the first occasion.

Since February is the month for the Academy Awards, I thought it would be an appropriate time to talk about a few of my favorites and why I believe they had important lessons to learn:

Argo – is about keeping your head when all around you has gone crazy. Based on a true story it shows the emotions of being stress and out of your element. It also shows bravery, leadership and what you can do when necessary and pushed.

The King’s Speech –a film about learning to find your voice, confidence and overcoming odds. It also shows us that people have personal obstacles to overcome no matter what their status in life may be and you must take ownership and find solutions.

The African Queen – this movie shows opposites do attract as well as strong personalities coming together as a team. It also demonstrates overcoming adversity and difficult circumstances.

The Last Emperor – shows that being sheltered from the outside world opens you to being used and the costly results. Acceptance, learning from teachers, not showing your fear as well as having impact without real power are lessons learned from this historical account.

The Wizard of Oz – has so many lessons you can learn in life. Accepting friends, being you, running away is not an answer, allowing yourself to dream and believe that good things will happen. The best point of the whole film is that you (like Dorothy) have everything you need in life. She had the Ruby Red Slippers all along that had the magic to get her home. Just like you have all the tools within yourself to achieve what you need in life.

Forrest Gump – this movie is a wonderful look at America through innocent eyes. Lessons of friendship, trying your best, being focused, positive, opened minded and paying attention are just a few of the great things you can learn.

The Sound of Music – teaches us to stand up for what is right no matter the cost and to not run away from our problems. It tells us to live the life you were born to live.

The Way – is a movie about living your life. It will touch your heart and make you think about family, grief, faith and how others come into our life and can teach us great lessons.

Gone with the Wind – can teach you about strong personalities, self confidence as well as you don’t always get what you are after. Other lessons are to separate reality from fantasy and the value of true love and friendship.

Gandhi – has so many lessons that it would be hard to put them all here in this writing. The main lesson is to live what you believe. It also demonstrates how one man can change people’s lives, and the course of history.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty – teaching us about the difference between dreaming and doing. It demonstrates how you can find the courage to live your dream. It shows that we are just moments away from beauty and that we need to let ourselves go a little every now and then.

Hopefully these examples will help you to see the different lessons we can learn while enjoying a good story. You will be surprised how it can help you with many situations in life. Sometimes you can quote a line from a film and it will make you stronger, lift your spirit or make you laugh at what you may be facing at the moment.
"All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us." Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.

"Life is not the amount of breaths you take, it’s the moments that take your breath away." Movie Hitch
