Moving Forward

Every day brings something new and different into our life. Even if your existence is a set schedule, or ingrained with habits, a multitude of circumstances can happen to make you happy, sad, shocked, or angry. I believe we forget how much we are capable of changing and achieving in our life until the time comes that we are forced to move forward. These changes in life or transitions have very distinct stages. The phases include an ending or letting go of a situation, a period of in-between which may be confusing or stressful and then a new beginning.

There are so many types of transitions in our life. Many can be very difficult and others easy, but overall it is still change nonetheless. A few examples would be changing jobs, moving to a new home, getting married, divorced or bringing a child into your life. Retiring, losing a loved one or being on your own for the first time are also types of transitions that may be challenging adjustments as well. All of these examples can transform or alter us into a different person depending on how we react and move forward.

Currently I am listening to a book called "Nothing is Impossible," by Christopher Reeve. This book is a great example of transition and attitude. Reeve overcame incredible hardship when his spinal cord injuries paralyzed him from the neck down. He went from the film actor and director to wheelchair bound requiring a respirator to continue breathing. His life changing moment took him through the depth of despair to overcoming great odds. He became a spokesperson, writer and he also founded a paralysis foundation to promote research. But outside of all those great accomplishments he continued to be an involved husband, father and friend until his death in 2004. He teaches us that we have the choice to live with self-doubt and the fear of taking risks or move forward to overcome and thrive. His story emphasizes the concept that life must be lived fully with gratitude and courage.

Having to manage change can be a little difficult so here are a few things to keep in mind while working through your transitions. Take time to recognize you are going through a change and the need to allow yourself to work through it. Allow for closure. Keep an open mind and know that you may have several steps before feeling comfortable in your new setting, lifestyle, or environment. Allow and find a support system along with education and little ways to take care of you. Embrace new beginnings and look to the future with the infinite possibilities available to you.

Are you making your transitions in life with purpose and resolution or are you looking backward hoping to keep life as it were before? Your attitude is the difference that will overcome the difficult times as well as help when things don’t go as planned. Open your mind to accept each day and the path to your next step in life. With each step forward you grow in knowing yourself a little better and perhaps you will find that your transitions in life will go much smoother.

"Transitions in life can offer opportunities for discovery, provided we are open to random encounters and serendipitous events." Robbie Shell
